JCHE holds Mental Health Forum

Posted: November 28, 2012

Today, JCHE sponsored an exceptional forum on mental health issues. Representatives from many senior housing providers throughout Boston were in attendance to have the opportunity to wrestle with this complex arena. A very knowledgeable and well-represented panel provided an overview. Panelists included Catherine Downing, Esq. from Downing and Flynn Law Firm; Marsha Frankel, LICSW, Clinical Director of Senior Services, Jewish Family and Children's Service; Ruth Harel Garvey, LICSW, Service Director of Specialized Services, Bay Cove; Sandy Hovey, Director of Protective Services, Ethos, and Maxine Bookless, Executive Director, JCHE's Golda Meir House. Laura Isenberg, Resident Service Administrator at Golda Meir House moderated the session.

The forum was designed to be participatory. Two actual but well-veiled cases were presented. Attendees had the opportunity to discuss strategies with the panelists to determine a course of action. The discussion provided the opportunity to view the complexities from multiple perspectives and to identify possible resources available to housing providers.

Funding for JCHE's Mental Health Forum was provided by the Boston Jewish Community Women's Fund. Their generous funding enabled JCHE and JF&CS to develop Tips and Techniques for Supporting Residents with Mental Illness: a Guide for Staff in Housing for Older Adults. The booklet gives very practical strategies for staff who work directly with residents in senior housing who face mental illness. The Guide can be downloaded here at no charge.JCHE & JF&CS recently presented the information from the Guide at a national conference sponsored by LeadingAge.  November 28, 2012
