CJP's Young Leaders Host the 14th Senior Prom at JCHE!

Posted: March 6, 2013

For a few hours this past Saturday night, JCHE's Ulin House dining room was transported back in time to the 1950s. There was a wall-size depiction of a juke box, LPs on the table, young men in black leather jackets with their hair slicked back, and young women in poodle skirts.

This magical transformation was the work of CJP’s Young Leadership Division. For the past 14 years, the YLD group has sponsored the Senior Prom at JCHE buildings. It’s a chance for those in their 20s and 30s to enjoy an evening together with those in their 70s, 80s and 90s.  It is truly a gift of joy from one generation to another.

From the moment the doors opened, the enthusiasm was palpable. As the residents strolled in, wearing party clothes and wide smiles, each was greeted by a YLD escort with an equally wide smile. Everyone was seated around the colorfully decorated tables and the room was abuzz with conversation and laughter. Any concern about what the generations would say to one another quickly vanished. This was a group that came together to have fun and, without a moment of hesitation, the party started.

The evening was filled with live Klezmir music from Ezekiel’s Wheels. The theme-related treats included potato chips and Tootsie Roll pops. Groups of residents and their escorts took turns posing for photos before the juke box. The dance floor was crowded with intergenerational couples trying out different dance styles.

The night was a success. Everyone at this sock hop was happy to slip back into time and recreate the bliss of the 50’s!
