Tonight I am sharing the congratulatory letter I sent to Mayor Walsh.  Last week both candidates took time to visit with seniors from our buildings and from Rogerson House at JCHE.  Both were fine candidates with genuine interest in the needs of Boston's seniors, and both recognized JCHE's key role in the City.

Dear Mayor Walsh:

Please let me be among the first to congratulate you on a fabulous victory and well-run campaign.  Distinguishing yourself in a pack of 12 and then running against a serious candidate is not easy and you did it with grace and style.

We are so grateful that you took time out of your busy last week of campaigning to meet with seniors from Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly (JCHE) and Rogerson House at JCHE’s auditorium.  The over 200 seniors who attended learned a lot about your sincerity and commitment to all Boston seniors.

At JCHE, we are very excited to work with you to build a city-wide senior agenda.  We know we have a friend in the corner office with empathy for all Boston residents. Your campaign literature had a robust senior services section recognizing many issues of concern to seniors—transportation, access to City services for non-English speakers and the value of the Boston Elderly Commission.   We really appreciated how you stated on your website “all mature adults deserve respect and support that allows for a fulfilling and independent life”—it so well captures the spirit of JCHE!

Please consider all of us at JCHE a resource to you as you build your policy and program plans—we are happy to volunteer on committees or task forces as you deem appropriate.  Our auditorium can also serve as a great venue for future meetings with seniors in Boston.

We hope to also partner with you to expand the affordable senior housing stock in Boston.  With over 1000 households on our waiting list, we simply cannot keep up with the demand and we know you share our belief that dignified, affordable housing should be a right for all seniors.

Again, thank you for reaching out to our tenants and warmest wishes for great success in your new position.
