State Treasurer, Newton Mayor Headline Celebration of New Board Chair Appointment

Posted: March 1, 2018

On Sunday, January 28, JCHE celebrated the appointment of its new Board Chair, Donna Kalikow. A lifelong Jewish community advocate, activist and volunteer, she has served on the JCHE Policy Board since 2012 as treasure. Her term as chair follows that of Bernard E. Kaplan, who has held the position since 2014, and whose leadership over the last four years has left an indelible mark on
JCHE.

MA State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg and Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller joined JCHE staff, resi- dents, board members, and supporters for the festive occasion at JCHE’s Coleman House in Newton. As the event’s keynote speakers, they both emphasized the importance of JCHE’s affordable and supportive senior housing model.

Below, we would like to share an excerpt from Ms. Kalikow’s speech that reflects a bold vision for our organization.

“We at JCHE are encouraged that “loneliness” at all ages is a hot topic now. Under the leadership of Amy Schectman and her dedicated team, we are optimistic that our mission and presence is more relevant than ever.

We will add more affordable homes in Newton, Brookline, Boston, west, north and south of the city. We will seek ways to boost our services to keep our residents healthy and in their apartments longer.

We will re-imagine how technology can elevate the well-being of our residents, upgrade our systems for our staff, and “smarten” our facilities.

We will invite our senior neighbors into our doors for exciting entertainment, volunteer opportuni- ties, and social gatherings to make new friends.

We  will shift the paradigm of “aging in place” and make “aging in community” the first choice by linking arms with our partners    in the healthcare profession; local, state and federal government; and the business community.

We will celebrate our Jewish values.

Golda Meir once said, “Old age is like a plane flying through a storm. Once you’re on board, there’s nothing you can do.” On some level, she is right, but at JCHE, you can chart your own journey at age 70, 80, 90 or greater and have company on the way.”

JCHE looks forward to realizing this vision under Donna’s leadership and extends heartfelt thanks to outgoing chair, Bernard Kaplan.
