Sugar 101

Posted: January 26, 2017

Our Fitness and Wellness Program demonstrates a commitment to helping residents lead healthy and active lives.

As part of this commitment, JCHE's Fitness & Wellness Specialist Danielle gave a presentation to our Shillman House residents on the health effects of sugar. Danielle emphasized the types of foods that have a surprisingly high sugar content, and offered tips and tricks for reducing sugar intake. She noted that sugar activates your body's "reward" system similar to how your body reacts to addictive substances like alcohol or nicotine; an overload of sugar spikes dopamine levels and leaves you craving more.

When reading a nutrition label, Danielle advised that we look for all ingredients ending in "OSE"-- because those ingredients are in fact sugar!
