Feeling secure at JCHE

Posted: November 5, 2012

Board meetings at JCHE begin with a D’var Torah. These opening remarks are often offered by a resident. For the October meeting, David Shonfield told members of JCHE’s Board about his life at Genesis House on the Brighton campus. David has lived at JCHE for 18 years and describes his life here as comfortable and secure. And judging from the number of activities he participates in, his life is also busy!

David – who will celebrate his 90 birthday next year – is involved with the monthly intergenerational program with the Edison School. He takes care of his health by going to the fitness center and using the NuStep recumbent bicycle multiple times each week. Other favorites: the weekly current events group is typically lively and he particularly enjoys his connection with medical students through JCHE’s program with Tufts University School of Medicine.

David highlighted the diversity within his building. He values how people from a full array of backgrounds live respectfully and cohesively at JCHE. He wondered aloud whether this sense of harmony could be experienced more frequently in the broader community.

The location of JCHE is very well suited to important aspects of David’s life. He is very accessible to family and within walking distance to his shul.

When finishing his remarks, David told the Board that in his mind, JCHE stands for Just Come Here and Enjoy!
