Celebrating Victory Day

Posted: May 15, 2014

On Friday May 9th, Coleman House celebrated its first all-community Victory Day celebration and it was fantastic! Residents from the building worked for days and weeks - planning, shopping and preparing for this wonderful program and feast. On Friday, they were in kitchen from 7:00 a.m. until the party started at 4:00 p.m.!

It started with a PowerPoint presentation (prepared by Ludmila Bogomolnaya, a Coleman resident) highlighting some of the more important events in Russia during World War II (complete with photos). With huge delicious platters of Russian delicacies and wine on every table, it was quite a treat!

After the informative piece, we honored the seven World War II veterans, both men and women, who live at Coleman House - some from the former Soviet Union, and some from the US. Several people then shared stories of their personal contributions and memories of the war. Molly Shapiro told us that she was actually in the Life Magazine photo of the sailor kissing the nurse on US Victory Day! It was very exciting!

This was all followed by a Russian entertainer, who was enjoyed by all. It was a memorable afternoon, that will hopefully become a new, yearly tradition!
