Shillman House

Shillman House

Work is now underway in Framingham to build the Morton and Etta Shillman House on the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Campus, a mixed-income housing community for seniors of all backgrounds. Located at 49 Edmands Road, Shillman House on the Weinberg Campus will have easy access to stores, restaurants, and services in the desirable Nobscot Village area of Framingham. Nearby transportation provides access to the extensive retail and commercial businesses, as well as medical and social services available in the Framingham/Natick area.

Shillman House will be an active and supportive living community for independent seniors. The building will have 150 one- and two-bedroom apartments with full kitchens. Ninety of the units will be affordable for low-income elders, and 60 units will be available at market rent. All tenants will have access to a broad range of programs and services that facilitate healthy aging (see Programs and Services). Dining services will also be available.

The design of Shillman House will complement the neighborhood's single-family and multi-family residences. The hub of the building will be common space that will include a state-of-the-art fitness center, computer center, library, art studio, multipurpose room, and convenience store. The building will be fully elevator equipped and parking will be available. The site will be beautifully landscaped and close to half of the almost nine acre property will remain as open space.

Shillman House will be designed in an environmentally responsible way. The building will incorporate many green features and advanced energy performance in its design. Photovoltaic cells on the roof will generate electricity. Geothermal wells used with energy efficient heat pumps will provide efficient and cost-effective heating and cooling for the building without emitting pollutants into the air. Through the selection of eco-friendly building materials, lighting, landscape design, and Energy Star rated appliances, JCHE is creating housing that is environmentally conscious, as well as affordable, healthy, and comfortable for our residents.

Shillman House is named in honor of the parents of Dr. Bob Shillman, CEO and President of Cognex Corporation in Natick, MA, who, along with his wife Mao, made a generous contribution to JCHE so that seniors in the area could enjoy quality housing.

The Weinberg Campus is named in recognition of The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation and the significant financial support it is providing for this development.

Groundbreaking for Shillman House will take place in the fall of 2008. Occupancy is slated to begin 18 months after the start of construction.

Eligibility

Tenants of Shillman House must be age 62 or older. Eligibility for Shillman House's subsidized apartments, like all of JCHE's subsidized units, will be based on income levels set by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Preference for a portion of the affordable units will be given to Framingham residents and their relatives.

Funding for Shillman House

State and federal programs are the primary source of funding for the building and management of Shillman House. However, to create the enriched and supportive housing environment that is the hallmark of JCHE housing, we must rely on private funds. Our success in fulfilling this commitment depends upon the generous contributions of individuals, corporations, and foundations.
