Merle Grandberg Honors the Past By Building A Future

For Merle Grandberg, it is really not complicated. “If we can do something to improve housing for our elders, then we must respond.” It is this sense of responsibility that motivates Merle to be so passionate about JCHE. She is a Vice-Chair of the Board and Chair of The Campaign to Build Shillman House. She has also placed JCHE at the top of her personal giving list.

The goal for The Campaign is to raise $8 million to build Shillman House in Framingham and provide JCHE's hallmark program and services to those who live there.

Merle’s parents lived at Golda Meir House, and following her mother’s death, her father remained there for almost ten years. “My parents lived in a modest apartment in Quincy where there were few opportunities to get to know their neighbors.” Life at Golda was different. “Even as a widower, my father blossomed. He found new friends and new interests. He started a breakfast club to bring neighbors together. He had never done anything like that before!”

According to Merle, “The Campaign to Build Shillman House is an opportunity to make an enormous difference in the lives of so many. Contributing to JCHE is much more than housing people. It’s offering people a wonderful quality of life.”

In her own family, Merle was able to garner crucial support for JCHE. She and her husband James have been joined by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kenneth Grandberg and Marcy D'Agostine, to create a major Campaign contribution from the Grandberg family. “I know our parents would be very proud that we are helping others have the life my parents so fully enjoyed.”
